Joe Rimkins Jr.

 I M A G E S

At his father's side, Joe Rimkus, Jr., learned the ins and outs of the craft of newspaper photojournalism. Joe Rimkus, Sr., was a photographer for the Miami News for 30 years, and inspired his son with his artistic flair and experimentation with technique. Joe Rimkus, Jr., joined the Miami Herald as a staff photographer in 1974, the same year he graduated from Florida International University and married his wife, Anita.
Rimkus is a local product, raised in South Florida, and a graduate of Pace High School and FIU. He also attended Miami-Dade Junior College North. Early on in his career, Rimkus cultivated a passion for shooting sports and outdoors stories. He has been capturing the action of college and professional sports in Miami, trials and triumphs, for more than thirty years. In addition to his dogged coverage of sports locally, Rimkus has trained his lens on Olympic moments and all the major news stories of the era.
According to Rimkus, the job of a newspaper photojournalist at the Herald is the best job there is, enabling him to meet "presidents, famous actors, actresses, the Pope and everyday fascinating people."
Next to photography, one of Rimkus' other favorite pastimes is fishing, also a love passed down from his father. While South Florida is an ideal place to cover news and sports, it is also perfect for being in the outdoors 365 days a year.
